The Value of Poker Odds

Playing poker gives its players a good chance of winning the game with a reduced house advantage. This is because the player can calculate the poker pot odds which enable them to have a better and improved chance of winning the game.

The value of pot odds in poker indicates the ratio of the pot size in relation to the cost of the call. It is usually indicated in the form of a ratio which shows the probability that the player will win a hand in relation to the card they have at hand which helps the poker player estimate the value of a future call.

Commonly the poker pot odds are expressed in ratio but most poker gamblers feel more comfortable of using the pot odds when it is converted into a percentage value. Because the pot odd is expressed in ratio, it is represented by two numbers which stands for the pot size and the call cost.

The poker pot odd ratio can be converted into percentage by using the formula of adding the pot size to the call cost. The call cost is then divided by the sum. Example will be a pot size of $50 and the call cost is $10. The ratio will be expressed as 50:10 or 5:1 when reduced. The percentage is taken by adding 5 and 1 with the sum of 6. 1 is then divided by 6 which in turn will give 0.17 or 17% pot odd.

This can be done through comparison of the pot odds and the odds to draw the card needed to win the pot. The poker player can win from the pot an amount that is higher than the cost call.

Otherwise, a higher pot odds compared to the odds of drawing a card that can give a player the chance to win the hand will most likely give a poker player lesser streak of win. The poker player may expect on the average to win an amount lesser than the call cost.
